Interview with Arts Hub

Interview with Arts Hub

What did you want to be when you grew up?
To be honest I didn’t dare dream it. I was petrified of disappointing myself. But secretly music bubbled away inside of me, and then I would let it out in the quiet moments and throw my voice around and wonder whether anyone would ever want to hear it.. then I realized it wasn’t about anyone else. I had to sing to be.

What did you become?
I spent many years creating fantastic distractions and tried my hand at a million things, all the while telling myself “who was I to dare to be a musician… musicians are so SPECIAL!!” Eventually I realized I was miserable and I couldn’t hide anymore! I am now a musician, a mama, and a juggler one of the many other hats I wear!

Rave Magazine- CHRIS PICKERING

Sassy, soulful songs. Mama Kin is the stage name for Danielle Caruana, sister to Michael and Nicky Caruana of festival scene favourites Bomba. This is her first LP, and it has come after being involved with the JB Seed program, raising two children and gaining the musical confidence to step out from behind her sibling’s shadows. Her brother Michael, however, does help out his younger sister on her debut effort and his Leon Russell-esque piano-playing sets the tone for a good chunk of the record. It’s a very accomplished effort, with some solid songs and groove-based arrangements that showcase Mama Kin’s soulful voice, all of which I imagine translates very well live. For me, the standout track on the record is actually the last one, a sparse number called Your Colour performed solely by Caruana on piano and vocals. It grabbed my attention through its honest lyrics and simplicity, and…

X-Press Album Review JENNIFER PETERSON-WARD

For Danielle Caruana, Mama Kin is a stage persona that resonates with who she is: the product of a very musical family and a woman who just loves her own family and two children.
Equal parts raconteur and soulstress, Mama Kin is a sassy femme fatale (who happens to be married to John Butler) who draws on her experiences of love, life and heartache on debut Beat And Holler, a compelling LP of private musical expression.

The approach Caruana brings to the material feels crafted for private enjoyment rather than public consumption, and the end result is both a deeply personal and emotionally satisfying work. More than simply an expression of her music, Beat And Holler provides a vividly painted portrait of Caruana’s personality, as her bittersweet melodies traverse the riotous, raw and intimate, all built on a solid bed of soulful piano crescendos and swampy bass beats…

The West Australian SIMON COLLINS

Mama Kin – Beat and Holler – Independent *** 1/2

First single Tore My Heart Out, an enchanting piano ballad reminiscent of Aimee Mann, dashed all expectation that this would be a vanity project for Mama Kin, aka Danielle Caruana, aka Ms John Butler. Besides being totally unfair, all comparisons to her husband are totally irrelevant on a highly impressive, soulful outing channelling the Maltese-Australian singer and pianist’s Latin passion and feminine power.

The high- spirited It’s For Me explains why Caruana, sick of being “the one who always sits firmly in the corner”, decided to launch a pop career. Equally feisty are songs such as On My Way and I’m Gonna Do It – both recall Fiona Apple – while her sultry vocals seem influenced by Billie Holiday and Nina Simone.

Mama Kin born into music – The West Australian SIMON COLLINS

Danielle Caruana remembers her first gig when, as a seven-year-old, she asked to sing at her dad’s 50th birthday and promptly delivered a cute version of Bonnie Raitt’s Louise – a cheerless number about a prostitute who dies alone and unloved.

While she may have been oblivious then, today Caruana is mortified.

“I sang with a smile on my face,” she laughs from the Fremantle home she shares with husband John Butler, daughter Banjo and son Jahli, whom she bounces on her knee during our interview.

The Independent Weekly – STEVE EVANS

On the basis of Mama Kin’s Papoose EP, the audience at Womadelaide is in for a treat when she takes to the stage. Her recording shows a solid bluesy base that highlights her capacity to create different and intriguing moods. Born Danielle Caruana, there’s no obvious sign of her Maltese heritage in these tracks. She says it is soul and roots music that moves her most, and the signs of that outlook are evident.

Love Shared with Mama Kin – News Unlimited

Words and Photos: Kate Scantleton

It isn’t often that we see bands that truly seem as though the music runs through their veins. Mama Kin and her band proved to be one of these lucky few tonight, allowing us to participate in the cleansing ritual of her set. The hot and steamy Zoo was the best place for this ritual to take place; the modesty and welcoming nature of the venue sincerely complimented the sounds and love that was being shared amongst performers and audience.

Interview with Sonya Feldhoff ABC Radio – Adelaide

Mama Kin is being hailed as this year’s next big thing in music. Adelaide audiences will get a chance to hear her brand of soul – a new Orleans style of stomping swamp music – when she appears at Womad  in March. In anticipation of the music festival that continues to gain popularity each year in South Australia, 891 Drive spoke with Mama Kin, AKA Danielle Caruana. Mama Kin reveals how she’s become true to her musical style only since having children. She also explains how vital the influence has been of her successful musical family, including husband John Butler.

Rave Magazine

Eclectic West Australian songstress MAMA KIN is slowly becoming a feature at festivals around the country. She catches up with YUMI SED as she prepares for the Mullum Music Festival.

Mama Kin delivers primal swampy soul with ease and grace. It’s therefore surprising to learn that music took quite a while to find her, despite being exposed to music from a young age. While she has come to music late in life, she has also come to music with a family in tow. I start off by asking how she manages her hectic festival schedule and life as a mum. “It’s an unsuccessful juggle most of the time,” Mama Kin laughs. “And a lot of hard work. I have a lot of festival stuff so I can go away briefly and then come back and then go away again, so it’s not for too long.”
